Here's a line from St. Paul's epistle to the Romans that jumped up at me this morning:
God has imprisoned all in disobedience that he might have mercy on all. This rather strange comment is followed by a paean that to a lover of the Blessed Trinity explains it all:
How deep are the riches and the wisdom and the knowledge of God! How inscrutable his judgments, how unsearchable his ways! For 'who has known the mind of the Lord? Or who has ever been his counselor? ... For from him and through him and for him all things are: to him be glory forever. If you don't know or love God, this all can seem most annoying -- we are imprisoned in disobedience so God can have mercy on us? Give me a break!
