Thomas Merton in Auschwitz

I was surfing the Net a couple of years ago and came across Charles Cingolani's poems. It was his Butler Pennsylvania poems that first caught my attention, but check out also Diary of a Young Monk, Thomas Merton in Auschwitz, and more.

Here is the first in his Thomas Merton in Auschwitz series:

1. Arrival Platform
Merton watched
what they did
with the child
that fell
from the cattle car
that had brought
the women from
Warszawa.
How the soldier
grabbed him
by the feet
and smashed him
up against
the steel siding.

Someone saw Thomas
rush over
to hold up
a trough of tin
to catch
consecrated chalicesful
of mothers' tears in.
