hospice begins morphine drip for Terri: but why?

Full story

A Reuters article reports that Terri Schiavo is declining rapidly. Her parents' lawyer believes time is pretty much out:

"Gibbs said Schiavo, 41, was declining rapidly. "They've begun to give her morphine drip for the pain. And at this point, we would say Terri has passed the point of no return," he told CBS' "Face the Nation."

The same article reports the mantra of no pain:

Doctors have said Schiavo, who is being cared for at a Florida hospice, would live for up to two weeks without the feeding tube. They say patients in her condition appear to feel little or no discomfort when deprived of nutrition and water.

Why the morphine, then?

Pick one, guys.

Actually, my heart is eased to know she is on a morphine drip. But really... what is the medical justification for it given what "doctors say".
